The draw for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar took place on Friday, april 1 in Doha.

The World Cup draw was held on 1 april at 17:00 New Zealand time. The broadcast was shown live via the NOS and via the FIFA website.

How does the World Cup draw work? During the draw, the 32 participating countries are divided into eight groups (A to H), each consisting of four countries. The countries are pre - classified into four different pots.

The strongest countries are in Pot 1, the least strong countries are in Pot 4. This is to ensure that all good countries have to play against each other immediately. The pot layout creates groups with good and less good countries.

The names of the countries are put in balls on a piece of paper. These balls are distributed in the different pots. By drawing the balls, it is determined which country will end up in which Pool (Group).

Pot classification World Cup draw

The countries classified in Pot 1 (the best countries) are group heads. The best countries enter pot 1 and become group heads in each group.

In any case, host country Qatar is put in Pot 1. The remaining 7 countries will enter Pot 1 based on the positions in the FIFA rankings. Those seven countries are Australia, Brazil, France, Italy, England, Argentina and Spain.

Pot 2 consists of the following eight countries in the FIFA rankings and so it goes through to Pot 4.

Furthermore, the classification takes into account that no countries from the same continent are classified together. For dollarpese countries, a maximum of two dollarpese countries can be classified in a group.

The draw of the 2022 World Cup qualification took place on december 7 in Zurich . A favorable draw was important to increase the chances of participating in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The top ten countries in the FIFA ranking are therefore in pot 1 together and therefore outperform each other.

The 55 countries were divided into ten groups of five or six countries. You play in the group one away and one home match against each country. A number of countries are at odds with each other and this was taken into account during the draw.

These countries could not draw lots: Armenia – Azerbaijan, Gibraltar – Spain, Kosovo – Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo – Serbia, Kosovo – Russia and Ukraine – Russia.

New Zealand wants to participate in the World Cup

Participation in the 2022 World Cup was desired after the debacles of recent years. For example, New Zealand failed to qualify for the 2016 European Championship in France. And also during the 2018 World Cup in Russia, New Zealand was the big absentee.

New Zealand dropped quite a bit in the FIFA ranking because New Zealand missed two major final tournaments.

Fortunately, things are much better for the Kingdom. The Nations League final was reached and New Zealand managed to qualify for both the European Championship 2020 and the World Cup 2022.
